Top 5 Billy Joel MSG Residency Cameos

In a recent episode of Hulu's The Mindy Project, the titular character says to her date, "I didn't realize they had sporting events at Madison Square Garden. I thought that's just where Billy Joel lives."  While it was meant as a joke, he kind of does.

Joel holds the record for most times performing at the famed New York City venue with a whopping 74 shows and counting.  With his historic residency at MSG, he's booked up through the end of 2016 and will add eight more shows to his tally by year's end.  Considering today (May 9th) is the Piano Man's birthday, we look back at the five best cameos during Joel's MSG residency.

Brian Johnson

Brian Johnson & Billy Joel - You Shook Me All Night Long (Orlando - Dec. 31, 2014)

AC/DC's Brian Johnson joins Billy Joel on stage for a performance of "You Shook Me All Night Long" at Amway Center in Orlando, FL, on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2014.

On the rock spectrum, the singer-songwriter qualities and jazz undertones of Billy Joel couldn’t be further away from the hard, driving force of AC/DC. This was no obstacle on December 31st, 2014 when Billy rang in the New Year at MSG. Check out this impromptu performance of “You Shook Me All Night Long” with Billy on the guitar and Brian Johnson on vocals.

Billy was just full of surprises during his November 25th performance! After surprising the audience with a duet with Sting, he then  brought John Mellencamp onstage for a performance of Mellencamp’s 1983 hit, “Crumblin’ Down.” Could you imagine how crazy it would be to see not only one, but three Rock and Roll Hall of Famers all on one stage, in one night?!

Howard Stern

Howard Stern Happy Birthday Billy Joel (MSG - May 9, 2014)

Howard Stern introduces Billy Joel before the start of Billy's 65th birthday concert on May 9, 2014. All proceeds were donated to the North Shore Animal League.

On his birthday in 2014, Billy not only performed for fans at MSG, but, he also donated every penny of the show’s proceeds to North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption agency. Howard Stern kicked the night off with an emotional introduction for Billy Joel’s 65th birthday performance that gave us the brilliant phrase, “Yes! Fartman cries!”

Christie Brinkley

Uptown Girl - Billy Joel - August 7, 2014 - MSG, New York

Billy Joel performs Uptown Girl at Madison Square Garden on August 7th, 2014.

On August 7, 2014, ex-wife Christie Brinkley was front and center for Billy’s performance, and in her honor he performed “Uptown Girl,” which, if you recall the music video also featured Brinkley.  At the end of the video above, Brinkley can be seen on the big screen above the stage smiling and supporting her ex-husband.
