The Hook: A song Petty wrote for their previous band become their first Top 10 hit.
Album: Damn the Torpedoes

Background: Before Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, there was Mudcrutch, which included Petty and core Heartbreakers members guitarist Mike Campbell and keyboardist Benmont Tench. Tench tells us that Petty actually wrote the Heartbreakers' first Top 10 hit, "Don't Do Me Like That," while they were still in Mudcrutch.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench says Petty wrote "Don't Do Me Like That" when they were with their previous band, Mudcrutch. OC:...oh yeah. :30
"We actually cut it with Mudcrutch, but it never came out because the Mudcrutch album never came out. We had done two albums when we opened for the J. Geils Band and Tom didn't want to do 'Don't Do Me Like That,' which I always loved. I'd bring it up -- I even mentioned to Peter Wolf, 'Tom's got a song that'd be great for the J. Geils Band' -- knowing that the J. Geils Band wrote their own songs. 'You probably don't want this, Peter, but you should hear it.' I don't know if he ever heard it, but I mentioned it to Jimmy Iovine on Damn The Torpedoes, and we played it like once and Jimmy was like, 'Oh yeah.'"
Tom Petty- Dont do me like that. LYRICS I was talking with a friend of mine, said a woman had hurt his pride. Told him that she loved him so and turned around and let him go. Then he said, "you better watch your step, or your gonna get hurt yourself.
