Def Leppard: "Photograph"
The Hook: Sing in tune, but with attitude.
Writer: Steve Clark, Pete Willis, Rick Savage, Joe Elliott and Robert John "Mutt" Lange
Stats: The band's breakthrough hit topped Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and reached number-12 on the Hot 100.
Background: Guitarist Phil Collen joined Def Leppard after his predecessor, Pete Willis, had already taken part in the writing of "Photograph." But he did get to play guitar on it and also contribute backing vocals, and he recalls that the band's producer, Mutt Lange, knew just how he wanted those to sound.
Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen on what the band and producer Mutt Lange were trying to achieve with the vocals on “Photograph.” OC:…do that. :26
“A lot of the American bands like Styx, REO Speedwagon, Journey even -- it was very well sung, but it was nice. We come in with a raw, rough edge. It was screaming in tune, it was more based on the punk ethos, or AC/DC -- scream, but do it right. It was a combination of both, and if you could make that tuneful...Mick Jagger's a great example. There's always so much attitude in his vocals, and Mutt wanted us to do that.”
