The Background: Although most of its members had previously been in groups that had put out albums, when they started The Cars, they were beginning from scratch. Guitarist Elliot Easton explains how the song "Just What I Needed" helped transport them to the next level.

“Really the song that brought us to the attention of the record companies. We had a demo tape and it actually become the most requested song on the local radio station. It was, in fact, getting reported in trade papers and in a little column next to the band’s name where you said what label they were on it said, ‘Tape.’ That kind of sparked the interest of the A&R people and they started showing up at our club dates and that song was an important one for us in launching the band.”
