“It’s a very simple tune, ‘Shattered.’ It’s like there wasn’t anything, it was just this groove. There was no lyrics and so I had to come up with these lyrics that went with this whole feel, but it’s got this very simple feel and the lyrics are all about New York — a rather run down New York in those days. It was just coming out of the period of New York when all the garbage was always in the street, the whole place smelled terrible. Everything was down, you know, real estate cost nothing.”
