Supertramp: “The Logical Song”

The Hook: Rick Davies says he encouraged Roger Hodgson to take an idea he was playing with in soundcheck to its logical extreme.

Year: 1979

Album: Breakfast in America

Writers: Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson

Stats: Peaked at number-six on the Billboard Hot 100.

Background: Like Lennon and McCartney, Supertramp’s two main songwriters shared credits on all the band’s songs, but mostly worked on them separately. Keyboardist Rick Davies tells us that although “The Logical Song” was written by Roger Hodgson, he did make a small contribution.

Supertamp singer and keyboardist Rick Davies on the contribution he made to Roger Hodgson’s “The Logical Song.” OC:…we’ve had. :19

“I heard Roger playing this in a soundcheck one time and he just was singing all those words, you know, with logical, vegetable, whatever. I said, ‘Why don’t you just make the whole song that? A play on that phrase, all the words you can think of.’ We built it up in the studio for Breakfast… and I think it was the biggest single we’ve had.”
