Fleetwood Mac: “Dreams”

The Hook: Stevie Nicks’s demo recording of it was “interesting” and didn’t exactly scream “number one hit.”

Year: 1977

Writer: Stevie Nicks

Stats: Amazingly, Fleetwood Mac’s only number-one single in the U.S.

Background: Bassist John McVie explains that “Dreams” began as a very minimal Stevie Nicks demo. He describes that recording and how the song grew out of it.

Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie on how “Dreams” developed out of a very rough Stevie Nicks demo recording. OC:…into it. :16

“The demo of that is quite interesting. It’s Stevie sitting at a piano with two fingers going bom-ding, bom-ding, bom ding-ding bom. And that was the demo and then she had the lyrics and the melody and we just sort of played along and flowed into it.”

Now here you go again You say you want your freedom Well who am I to keep you down Its only right that you should Play the way you feel it But listen carefully to the sound Of your loneliness Like a heartbeat..
