New Springsteen Track “Freedom Cadence” Now Streaming

Bruce Springsteen’s new song, "Freedom Cadence," which he recorded for the closing credits of the new film Thank You For Your Service, is now available online.

Springsteen's moody, ambient track is based on "Some Say Freedom Is Free," a military song credited to PFC Roger L. Southard that's introduced to soldiers during basic training and has been passed down through the years. Springsteen changed a few of the lyrics for his version.

Thank You For Your Service director Jason Hall, who wrote the film based on the book of the same name by David Finkel about soldiers returning from Iraq with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, tells the Springsteen fan site Backstreets that producer Jon Kilik is a friend of Springsteen's and showed him the movie.

"Bruce loved it, watched it twice and then said, 'Send me that recording. Come back in a month and bring that kid (Adam Schumann, the subject of Finkel's book). So Adam went up there with Jon and recorded the song with him."

Springsteen co-produced the track with Ron Aniello, recruiting Schumann and Kilik on backing vocals. There's no word yet on a commercial release for the song.

Springsteen is in the midst of his Broadway run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which is currently scheduled into February with rumors of an extension into June.
