WCSX Classic Cuts
Queen: "Liar"
The Hook: Pieced together from some riffs that were lying around.
Album: Queen
Year: 1973
Writer: Freddie Mercury
Stats: The second single released from Queen's first album, it didn't chart in the U.S. or the U.K.
Background: Queen released two singles from their debut album, both of which failed to chart on either side of the Atlantic, but did get airplay on some adventurous American FM rock radio stations. Guitarist Brian May recalls "Liar" as coming from around the same time as their first release, "Keep Yourself Alive."
Queen guitarist Brian May says “Liar” came together in much the same way as their other single of their debut album, “Keep Yourself Alive.” OC:…came out. :18
“That’s exactly the same vintage, and ‘Liar’ was put together with a lot of bits and pieces that were lying around, riffs that sort of gradually got assembled to make a whole. Freddie wrote the words, but as with ‘Keep Yourself Alive’ there was a lot of sort of group participation in the way it came out.”
