The Rolling Stones: “Under My Thumb”

The Hook: Hard for Mick to believe its lyrics were once considered provocative.

Album: Aftermath

Year: 1966

Writers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards

Stats: Never released as a single in any English-speaking country.

Background: With the rise of ’60s feminism, the lyrics to the Stones’ “Under My Thumb” were seen by some as very provocative and, worse, sexist. Mick Jagger has a different take on it.

Mick Jagger on why there’s nothing very shocking about “Under My Thumb” these days. OC:…to it. :20

“‘Under My Thumb’ is pretty tame, really. You might write that song now, but stronger. I think that ‘Under My Thumb’ is quite balanced lyrically because it’s really, I think, if you actually read the lyrics, quite balanced. And it’s got such a light, dippy hook, you know. The lyric’s quite strong, but the tune is kind of quite dippy, while there’s that sort of light Los Angeles touch to it.”
