HANCOCK, MI – MARCH 27: Signs hang on the wall outside of Peterson’s Fish Market on March 27, 2017 in Hancock, Michigan. Five generations of the Peterson family, who own and operate the market and adjacent restaurant and operate two fishing boats, have worked as commercial fishermen on Lake Superior. Fishing on the Great Lakes, which is estimated to generate $7 billion annually, may be threatened by proposed cuts in the federal budget to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). The GLRI addresses environmental issues in the Great Lakes such as invasive species control, and agricultural and industrial pollutants. The proposed budget would cut funding for the program from about $300 million to $10 million a year. The Great Lakes, which many communities rely on for drinking water, contain 20 percent of the world’s surface fresh water. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)
