1. Special Falcon
Special Falcon is codename for the secret car project led by Lee Iacocca before Ford management approves the Mustang.
2. 1964 World’s Fair
Henry Ford II gives the world its first look at the all-new Mustang on April 17, 1964.
3. 22,000 orders
22,000 Mustang orders are placed the first day, with 419,000 cars sold the first year.
4. 29,545 miles
With an average length of 15.6 feet, 10 million Mustangs parked end-to-end equates to 29,545 miles – enough to circle the world with 1,200 miles to spare.
5. Arms race
Carroll Shelby launches GT350 – first salvo of the muscle car era, inspiring the Boss, Mach 1, Cobra Jet, SVO/SVT, Shelby GT500 and Bullitt Mustangs.
6. Is that a horse or an airplane?
After considering Cougar, Stiletto and Allegro, the name Mustang – inspired by a World War II fighter plane – sticks, but the team goes on to push the pony branding as the car is launched.
7. Mustang sedan or wagon?
Close to its 1964 reveal, Ford considers sedan and wagon options, settling on the coupe and convertible body styles that remain to this day.
8. Mustang gold
A 1967 GT500 Super Snake sells for $1.3 million in May 2013. The value of the original 1968 Mustang fastback driven by Steve McQueen in the movie “Bullitt” might eclipse that.
9. Mustang chop shop
