Background: Golden Earring singer Barry Hay told us a story about something he’d heard about U.S. Olympic swimming legend Mark Spitz and the band’s big hit “Radar Love.” It may or may not be true, since “Radar Love” came out in 1973 and Spitz actually retired from competitive swimming after winning seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Golden Earring singer Barry Hay on a story he heard regarding 1970s U.S. Olympic swimming star Mark Spitz and “Radar Love.” OC:…pretty well. :19
”They asked him what he was thinking about while he was swimming and he said every time he was swimming he was thinking of that song, he was playing that song in his head. I thought that was real cute. And I remember when we did that song we were talking about the lyrics and said we wanted the lyrics to be as universal as possible and we also wanted it to be a good song for drivers, a good driving song. So it came out pretty well.”
