“’People Are Strange’ came about one night when Jim was on one of his real downer moods and he was talking about killing himself and stuff. This is about five in the morning. And I said, ‘Let’s go up and watch the sun from the top of Laurel Canyon.’ And we went up there and all of a sudden his mood totally changed. And he came up with the idea of that song, which is if you’re weird, then everything’s gonna be weird, but if you’re cool, then everything’s cool .”
