Howell Factoids:
- January 1836, saw the establishment of the first post office. Flavius J. B. Crane was postmaster and the post office was located in the Eagle Tavern.
- Originally called Livingston Centre, Howell was slated to become the county seat in 1836. Brighton said, “No thanks,” and “vigorously opposed” the move for TWELVE YEARS. It wasn’t until county buildings were erected in Howell that Brighton recognized Howell’s designation.
- The Michigan Challenge Balloonfest is an annual hot air balloon festival established in 1984, and held in Howell during the last weekend of June. The event draws more than 100,000 over the three-day weekend.
