Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: "Into the Great Wide Open"

The Hook: Petty couldn't imagine making a living as a rock and roll musician until The Beatles came along.

Album: Into the Great Wide Open

Year: 1991

Writer: Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne

Stats: Reached number-four on Billboard's Album Rock Tracks chart and number-92 on the Hot 100.

Background: Tom Petty wrote "Into the Great Wide Open" about a guy who decides to pack up and move to Hollywood to try and become a rock star. Although Petty himself followed a similar path, he said he would never have thought such a career choice possible until The Beatles came along.

Tom Petty on how The Beatles inspired him. OC:...to go. :28

"To be Elvis Presley didn't seem like something someone could do. You would have to (a) look like Elvis Presley. But The Beatles was this self-contained band that was doing it all right there. And it looked like they were having so much fun. And you could kind of tell these guys are friends, they're young guys and they're having a ball and this is certainly paying their bills and this looks like the way to go."
