Acorn With a Side of Wire…
Hanging Christmas lights can sometimes be hard and dangerous work, so nothing feels better then seeing the glow of your house after you first turn them on..That is if they actually work…Many people have been experiencing the same issue after hanging up their lights this year, all the wires seem to be cut in half by some local furry friends…
After people began posting photos of the wires, some people are thinking the wires are being cut by squirrels, Bunnies, cats, or even rats!
Perry Shah is a resident of Pleasant Ridge and said this to the Free Press…”We’re always purchasing new sets every year because of that. Squirrels and chipmunks. I’m 100% sure,””It’s a clean cut. I don’t know if it’s chewing through it or running across or through them and snapping the taut line.”
Other residents around Metro Detroit have mentioned having this same problem, with some people having to buy new lights every year…But Michigan is not the only state that has to deal with this…
Last year, Sea Girt, N.J., police said a squirrel cut holiday lights with its teeth, according to WABC-TV.
A year earlier the Boston Globe reported that squirrels gnawed through wiring and switched off the holiday lights to trees and buildings on Boston Common.
While squirrels often are to blame for problems with outdoor holiday decorations, they’ve also been blamed for causing bigger power problems — along parts of the power grid.
The website www.cybersquirrel1.com has a nationwide map listing 1,228 confirmed instances, going back to 1987, of squirrels causing power outages. But they aren’t the only critters that have caused outages, the website notes. So have snakes, raccoons, rats, cats, martens, jellyfish, moneys — and, of course, humans.
