After over three weeks with no pay and no clear end point, many people are desperate just to stay afloat. Mortgage payments, rent, and other bills along with gas and of course food, are all necessities these government employees simply can't afford without a paycheck.
In Ferndale, the owners of The Blue Nile Ethiopian restaurant are doing what they can by providing free meals to 14 furloughed federal government workers each day on a first come, first served basis. Reservations can also be made by sending a private message with your name and phone number to The Blue Nile's Facebook page.
In addition, some credit card companies, lenders, loan servicers and phone companies have stepped up and made assistance options available to their customers during the government shutdown, with creditors reminding their customers it is better to ask for assistance prior to missing payments. USA Today and ABC News have compiled lists of some of the assistance programs.
