Port Huron Factoids – CSX City of the Week
Congratulations to Port Huron,
You’re the WCSX City of the Week!
Port Huron factoids:
- In 1890 the world’s first international under-water railroad tunnel was built under the St. Clair River to connect Port Huron and Sarnia.
- Grand Trunk Railway Depot, which is now part of the Port Huron Museum, is where 12-year-old Thomas Edison departed daily on the Port Huron – Detroit run. In 1859, the railroad’s first year of operation, Edison convinced the railroad company to let him sell newspapers and confections on the daily trips.
- Port Huron’s Fort Gratiot Lighthouse was the first lighthouse established in the State of Michigan. Built in 1829 and automated in 1933, the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse continues to guide shipping on Lake Huron into the narrow and swift-flowing St. Clair River.
- Port Huron is the easternmost point in the State of Michigan.
