The Ohio State University was getting roasted by college football fans after reports surfaced that the school is seeking to trademark the word “the.”

Ohio State filed the trademark application last week, triggered by the school’s desire to sell new merchandise with “THE” spelled out on shirts and hats.
University spokesman Chris Davey told The Columbus Dispatch in a statement. “Like other institutions, Ohio State works to vigorously protect the university’s brand and trademarks,” “These assets hold significant value, which benefits our students and faculty and the broader community by supporting our core academic mission of teaching and research.”

The University of Michigan, responded on Twitter with a brilliant photo.

Trademark attorney Josh Gerben, who discovered the trademark attempt, made it clear how unlikely Ohio State is to find success:

I am Big Jim's work wife.
