Ferndale Factoids – CSX City of the Week
Congratulations to Ferndale,
You’re the WCSX City of the Week
Ferndale Factoids:
- Ferndale Yard was a large Grand Trunk Western railroad yard on their Detroit-Grand Haven line, beginning north of State Fair Avenue in Detroit and extending northwest to Nine Mile in Ferndale.
- Ferndale’s original high school, Lincoln High School, began construction in 1920. Lincoln High School almost had a pool. Doors were built on the back of the building and space was cleared until it was determined the money was needed elsewhere. Instead, the space was used for tennis, badminton, handball, archery, rifle range and school parties. Eventually, a new high school was built and the original Lincoln High School became the Junior High. It was finally demolished in 1976 and the Foodland Shopping Center was built in its place.
- The Woodward Dream Cruise originated in Ferndale. Woodward Dream Cruise began in 1995 as an effort by Nelson House and a handful of volunteers to raise money for a children’s soccer field in Ferndale.
