Rumors have been swirling that Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer could become Joe Biden’s pick for a running mate, but she’s hasn’t given specifics about the possibility– until now.

In an interview with TODAY’s Craig Melvin on Tuesday (May 19), Whitmer said she had an “opening conversation” with Biden about his search for a running mate.

Whitmer adds that “it’s not something I would call a professional or formalized vetting,” but that she’s still in contact with the campaign.

Right now, though, Whitmer says “100% of my energy and focus” is on helping Michigan deal with the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.
