Saturday marked the first day of Kwanzaa, a seven-day holiday that the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History describes as an “African-American holiday founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, as a way to unite the community following the Watts Rebellion.”

In honor of the holiday, the Charles H. Wright Museum will present the seven principles of Kwanzaa, all live streamed via their website nightly at 7 p.m. through Jan. 1, 2021.

The museum will stream songs, stories, poetry, dances and more. Each evening, one of the seven principals of Kwanzaa is celebrated. Those principals include Umoja, Kujichagulia, Ujima, Ujamaa, Nia, Kuumba and Imani.

“Although Kwanzaa is a traditionally African-American holiday, people from all walks of life are invited and encouraged to participate, then share what they’ve learned each day,” the Charles H. Wright Museum website states.
