Michigan Reconnect Program Will Pay Tuition for Residents – Do You Qualify?
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Republican and Democratic legislators have officially announced the $30 million Michigan Reconnect program.
The program is projected to help more than 4.1 million Michiganders, 25 or older, who don’t have a college degree to earn a tuition-free associate degree or skills certificate.
Michigan Reconnect will cover the cost of tuition for eligible adults who earn an associate degree or skills certificate via their in-district community college. It also offers skills scholarships that are good for more than 70 private training schools that offer certificates in high-demand careers.
So, do you qualify?
To be eligible for Reconnect program, an individual must:
- Be at least 25 years old when you apply
- Be a Michigan resident for at least 1 year (US citizen or eligible noncitizen)
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent, e.g., GED
- Have not yet earned an associate or bachelor’s degree
- Not be in default on a federal student loan
Those who have previously earned a certificate but without an associate or bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply to the program. Also, those currently enrolled in an associate degree program or occupational certificate program but have not completed either are also eligible to apply.
