Michigan is About to Go from Snow to Swimsuit Weather

We live in Michigan, so it should come as no surprise that the weather can be, well, dramatic. I mean, it was actually colder in Detroit on Easter than it was on Christmas. How is that possible? It seems very unfair, but such is life in Michigan.

Earlier this week, much of lower Michigan got trampled with snow, which is fairly odd for April, but does happen in these parts. Parts of the Detroit area and the Thumb even had a winter weather advisory on Monday, which just ended Tuesday morning. Not sure about you, but I'm so over the snow and ice. I was over it back in November, so having it in April is extra annoying. Thankfully, Michigan's weather luck is about to change.

Many Michigan meteorologists are saying this will be the last "big" snow that we get this season. I sure hope so. What's more exciting is that by this weekend, much of lower Michigan will be in the 70s- even near 80. According to Weather.com, Detroit will hit 75 on Sunday, albeit with a chance of thunderstorms, so maybe not ideal for sunbathing. But, don't get too excited, because after Sunday, the highs dip back into the lower 50s. Elsewhere in Michigan, Lansing is projected to hit 75 on both Saturday and Sunday, Flint is on target to hit 73 on Saturday and 75 and Sunday, Grand Rapids is projected to reach 74 on Saturday and 71 on Sunday and Traverse City is expected to reach 68 on Saturday and 66 on Sunday.

I'm so crossing my fingers that this will be the trend going forward. So far, April has been chilly and rainy, although they do say April showers bring May flowers. In any case, make plans now to enjoy the warm weather this weekend, because it's a long time coming.

Summer is on the way, and that means it's about to be road trip season. I always enjoy driving around during the spring and summer months, discovering new towns around Michigan. Fall is a great time to road trip, too, because of the gorgeous colors. This state has so many beautiful small towns, which make for perfect stops during a long road trip.

So, how small are Michigan's tiniest dwellings? I actually looked up some data from the state of Michigan and discovered that many towns in Michigan have just a few hundred people. That's almost hard to imagine. Some examples are Addison at 597, Akron at 394 and Alba at 295. Now, that's really, really small.

When it comes to Michigan's quaint cities, I always enjoy South Haven. My uncle lives around that area, and I used to go there at lot as a kid. The beach town is right on the eastern shores of Lake Michigan, in the southwest part of the state. Its population is just over 4,000 residents, but it seems way bigger during the summer months, as it's a very popular tourist destination. Just thinking about South Haven's warm, sandy beaches is making me smile. If you head there, don't forget to check out South Haven's trademark red lighthouse.

Of course, South Haven is just the beginning when it comes to great places to visit. Read on for 40 small towns in Michigan that you need to visit this summer for a weekend getaway. You'll also find information on each town below with a link to that town's official website, so you can find more details about the best time to visit and how to get there.
