Michigan Has Two of the Best Donut Shops in the Entire U.S.
Who doesn’t love a warm, sweet donut? Friday (June 3) is National Donut Day, and in honor, the crew at Yelp has released their tally of the Top 100 U.S. Donut Shops.
Here in Michigan, we have plenty of great donut shops, many of which are locally owned. That said, it’s not surprising that not one but two Michigan donut shops are on the list. My mouth is starting to water just thinking about these great donut stops.
Avon Donuts in Pontiac and Cindy’s Donuts & Ice Cream in Kentwood are both inside the top 50 on the fresh list for 2022. To determine that those two shops were among the best, Yelp says it “scoured the nation for the best bakers of America’s glazed, iced, dipped, sprinkled, and cream-filled confections.”
In addition, Yelp says it looked into which donuts were most popular with donut lovers. “Light, fluffy, yeast donuts and denser cake donuts are still bestsellers, but super-sized donuts that could ‘feed an army’ are becoming increasingly popular,” they said. “So are the many twists on the traditional donut, such as crullers, bear claws, fritters, and cronuts.” My personal favorite flavor of donut is pretty simple: a regular, sourdough donut with vanilla frosting and sprinkles. My second favorite is a regular, sourdough donut with chocolate frosting and sprinkles. You’ve got to have the sprinkles.
Avon Donuts is No. 28 on the list. Avon is used to the accolades, as in 2018, Time Magazine ranked them the No. 4 donut shop in the U.S. The shop, located at 45324 Woodward Avenue, serves up a whopping 50 different donut flavors daily. Cindy’s Donuts landed at No. 48 on Yelp’s list. It’s known for its homemade donuts, crullers, beignets and fritters. View the full list of the best donuts in the country via Yelp here.
