Michigan is Tops in…Beekeeping?
Bees are everywhere right now, and Michigan is apparently a great spot for beekeepers. That’s not surprising, since we do have a lot of those stingers in the Mitten.
In honor of National Pollinator Week beginning June 20, Lawn Love ranked 2022’s Best States for Beekeeping. “We looked at several metrics, such as total honey production, number of active bee colonies, beekeepers’ salaries, and honey suppliers,” they state in the study. “We also considered colony losses and whether the state protects honeybees from harmful neonics.”
So, how does Michigan rank? We’re No. 8 in “Total Honey Production” (1,000 Pounds), No. 7 in “Value of Honey Production” (Thousands), No. 4 in “Number of Honey Supplier”s and No. 6 in “Number of Apiculture Classes.” Pretty high on the tally! Overall, we’re No. 7 for beekeeping, in general. View the full ranking here.
