Cedar Point is Retiring a Favorite Coaster
They say all good things must come to an end, and that’s the case with one Cedar Point ride that’s been a favorite for almost two decades.
On Tuesday (Sept. 6), the park announced that after 19 years and 18 million of riders, Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point is officially being retired. According to a post on the park’s official Twitter account, the Cedar Park team is working to create a “new and reimagined ride experience.” They also state that more information will be release at a later date.
Of course, the retirement likely has something to do with the fact the ride was shut down last year following a woman being injured after a metal object fell from the coaster. She wasn’t on the ride but standing in line when the metal object hit her on the head. An investigation followed the incident, and Cedar Point was cleared of violating any laws in the accident.
The Top Thrill Dragster opened in 2003, and at the time, it was a huge deal. The ride set four new records: world’s tallest complete circuit roller coaster, tallest roller coaster, tallest roller coaster drop and fastest roller coaster. The ride also had a 400-foot drop and a maximum speed of 120 mph.
