If you’re of a certain age, you probably grew up using the thumbs up emoji as a sign of approval or positivity. But if you’re part of Gen Z, you might want to think twice before sending that little digital thumbs up. According to young people, the thumbs up emoji is rife with passive aggressiveness and confrontation.
24-year-old Reddit user ‘u/lil_italian_stereotype’ summed up the Gen Z argument, saying it is best ‘never used in any situation’ as it is ‘hurtful’. Others agreed it is bad form, especially at work where it can make the team appear unfriendly and unaccommodating. Here’s more on this very important issue

Business consultant Sue Ellson says it is important to understand the dynamic of your workplace before sending emojis – especially the thumbs up. “In some cultures adolescent manual workers would never dream of speaking back to their seniors let alone use an emoji,” she told FEMAIL.
So there you have it. The next time you’re tempted to hit send on that little digital thumbs up, think twice. You might just be setting yourself up for a world of hurt.
