03BUTT, 0GIVEN, and OHMYGOD are just some of the 20,000-plus words the Michigan Department of State won’t allow. According to MLive.com, these words are just too crude, political, or dirty for Michigan license plates.
Some are pretty obvious why they were rejected and I won’t retype them, but you can see the whole list here. Others are a bit of a stretch that I think is a little over-cautious. Is “OHHHHH” really that bad? Does the MDS think that’s sexual?
Per the state law the following rules apply when you want that new vanity plate:
Are profane, obscene, sexually explicit or graphic, excretory-related or depicting a swear word
Describe intimate body parts
Describe drugs or alcohol, including their use or culture (ex. ‘M00NSHN’)
Describe illegal activities or illegal substances (ex. ‘MAFIA’)
Substantially interfere with law enforcement’s IDing of plates
Disparage, promote or condone hate or violence against a business, group or person (ex. ‘H8C0PS’)
Conflict with Michigan’s license plate number system
No WIENER Michigan plate for you sir!
The Secretary of State actually has 25 employees and their job is to review these license plates. I would love to sit in on those meetings. Or that Zoom. You know it has to be a Zoom meeting. “Okay next up on the list is DCKBUT, yay or nay?” A bunch of rumbling then the hilarious name you spent your entire bathroom break coming up with is BANNED!
There’s a 3 step process to get your plate approved. The above team reviews and flags all the violations. Another compiles all the flagged plates and sends them to a committee that has a final decision. Then another committee considers alternate options.
Your plates will be banned for being politically charged. You mess with a company’s logo or brand and that can also be banned. For example “E1NER” on a Western Michigan University plate because W of the logo completes the “naughty word”. I mean come on, WIENER? Remember when Kramer on Seinfeld was the Assman? Bet that wouldn’t work with our MDS!

Michigan's Top 15 Companies for Remote Jobs in 2023
If working remote is your thing, then you’ll want to take note of the companies hiring most work-at-home employees right now, and some of them are in Michigan. Obviously, the pandemic also cause a lot of people to decide they would rather permanently work at home as opposed to being in an office each day.
FlexJobs has released its 10th annual “Top 100 Companies to Watch for Remote Jobs” list. In the study, they note that between 2021 and 2022, “FlexJobs saw a 20% increase in the number of remote job listings on the site, compared with just 12% the previous year. And with the wider adoption of remote work came more variety in job titles and career levels. While a majority of positions were for experienced-level jobs (62%), manager and senior-level roles claimed 32% of the remote job listings. The remaining 6% of postings were attributed to entry-level jobs.”
This year’s list features some companies that have been on the tally a long time and others that are new. As for the job categories, “With remote work shifting from a pandemic-era policy to a permanent business solution throughout 2022, this year’s top career categories reflect the wide-scale adoption of remote work across various industries.” The career fields that saw the most significant growth in 2022, according to the study, are accounting & finance (31%), HR & recruiting (22%), and marketing (20%). They note that “modest growth” was also seen among computer & IT, project management and medical & health. One popular remote job field, customer service, did however experience a drop of 6% from 2021.
So, which companies are hiring the most at-home workers right now? Read the list of the top 15 below. I recognize many of these names, but there are a few companies that I don’t. Either way, it appear there are great job opportunities at all of these firms. Also, while many of these companies are not based in Michigan, since the work is largely remote, many of them offer jobs for residents. Find the full list and more information via FlexJobs here.
