Yelp has released its annual list of the top 100 restaurants in the country, and Michigan has not one, not two but three restaurants that made the tally. This shouldn't be surprising, as Michigan has a ton of fantastic locally-owned restaurants across the state.
According to Yelp, the list was put together by reaching out to Yelpers and asking them to share their favorite dining spots. Then, according to Yelp, it "ranked each by total number of submissions, ratings, reviews, and geographic representation, among other factors."
The No. 1 restaurant in the entire U.S., according to the list, is Los Angeles spot called Broken Mouth. That restaurant, a Hawaiian-Korean cafe from chef-owner Tim Lee, scored five stars across more than 1,000 reviews for food such as Spam Musubi (“sushi” with canned meat and purple rice) and Meat Jun, a traditional fried beef dish.
The No. 1 spot in Michigan is Baobab Fare, Detroit, which came in at No. 28 on the list. Yelp says, "While shining a light on cuisine from the East African country of Burundi, this sunny downtown Detroit eatery has also been capturing the attention of the restaurant world: Last year, married founders and chefs Nadia Nijimbere and Hamissi Mamba were semifinalists for the James Beard Foundation’s award for Best Chef: Great Lakes."
As for the other Michigan restaurants that made the cut, coming in at No. 38 is House of Falafel in Farmington Hills. Of the spot, Yelp says, "It takes a lot for a Detroit-area falafel restaurant to stand out, but House of Falafel in suburban Farmington Hills has done just that." Finally, landing at No. 74. is Chadd's Bistro in Rochester Hills. Yelp comments, "A mainstay on Yelp’s best-of lists, this local sandwich shop strives to make everything from scratch, right down to the ketchup, bistro sauce, and ranch dressing. Huge sandwiches, like the Highlander with roast beef, cheddar, Swiss cheese, grilled mushrooms, and horseradish sauce draw fans year after year, while the crispy, hand-cut French fries are credited with putting this spot on the map." Michigan has some great restaurants and fantastic views, so it makes sense that many establishments combine both. With the Great Lakes and so many inland lakes, there are plenty of Michigan restaurants that overlook water, making that dining experience extra special.
Now that the weather is getting nicer, it's an even better time to explores this state and find some eateries with incredible views. The crew at Michigan.org recently put together a list of 12 Michigan restaurants with beautiful views, and we're sharing it below.
One of the restaurants, The Cudahy Chophouse Restaurant on Mackinac Island, has sadly closed since their article published. In place of that spot, I picked my own favorite Michigan restaurant with a view, which is The Butler in downtown Saugatuck. The Butler has been situated on the water in Saugatuck for more than 60 years and offers fresh seafood, classic American cuisine and more. It's a casual dining restaurant, so no need to get fancy.
One of the spots that made Michigan.org's list is very familiar to me: The English Inn in Eaton Rapids. That was the best spot to go for prom when I was in high school, so I ate at The English Inn at least twice in high school on prom night. "Cozy is the hallmark of this restaurant and inn, where you can warm yourself by a crackling fire while gazing over what feels like the grounds of your private castle estate," Michigan.org states of The English Inn. "The 15-acre property was developed just 30 minutes from Lansing for auto baron Irving Jacob Reuter and his wife Janet, and the view still includes their pergola, swimming pool and gazebo. After a formal meal upstairs, retire to the lower level English pub for a nightcap." Read the full list below and try to visit at least one of these delightful spots this season.
