Led Zeppelin Fans Tear Down the Fences in Australia, 1972
On February 16th, 1972 fans of Zeppelin in Australia, made their voice heard by tearing down fences, literally. Led Zeppelin started their tour of Australia and New Zealand on February 16th and conclude on February 29th. But not without a few incidents!
According to www.perthnow.com.au, over 5000 fans inside behaved and were free of incident. An 18-year-old Robert Oats snuck into the soundcheck (and more) and described what was going on inside:
“One guy stormed the stage and ripped off Robert Plant’s t-shirt but apart from that it was a positive vibe,” he laughed.
“We were all unaware of the bedlam that was going on outside.”
While outside, 500 fans without tickets arrived with bolt cutters and wire cutters, and even ladders. 4000 fans waited outside the gates without tickets just to listen.
The following day, Page’s hotel was raided by the police. The drug bust yielded nothing and Jimmy Page said it was probably retribution for the earlier riot.
thisdayinmusic.com quoted Jimmy Page about the night:
Jimmy Page told a local paper: “They came into our rooms and started abusing us – they were very rude”.
Just prior to the start of the Australian tour, Led Zeppelin has been banned from entering Singapore because of their long hair.
Led Zeppelin just can’t get a break when it came to concerts, sometimes venues just assumed the worst based on past experiences. Check out how much security prepared for the Silverdome show right here.
On the final day of the tour, Led Zeppelin played Festival Hall in Brisbane Festival Hall on February 29th
