Michigan Snowstorm Projections: How Much Will Your Area Get?
They say that in Michigan, March can come in like a lion or a lamb, and we’re getting a lion this time around. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the majority of lower Michigan, as a major storm system heads to the area towards the end of this week.
The Winter Storm Watch will be in effect from Friday afternoon (March 3) through early Saturday (March 4). Snowfall will start during the early afternoon on Friday and keep going for about 12 hours, until early Saturday. According to the National Weather Service’s predictions, the heaviest area of snow will likely hit the Kalamazoo area. However, no matter where you are in lower Michigan, you’re likely to get hit with several inches of snow, with 4 to 8 inches being the most common total across the state.
So, what about your specific city? Currently, the storm is projected to blanket the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The Saginaw area is projected to get a whopping 8-12 inches of snow, Flint is projected to get 8 inches, Grand Rapids at 6-8 inches and Lansing at 6-8 inches. Metro Detroit is projected to see 4-6 inches of snow, with northern parts of Metro Detroit, specifically north of I-96, possibly getting up to 6-8 inches of snow. Ice is also possible, according to the National Weather Service, as well as high winds of 35-40 mph on Friday in some areas. The good news is that both Saturday and Sunday are expected to be in the 40s for much of lower Michigan, and Monday is even expected to hit the 50s in many areas. That means the snow shouldn’t stick around too long. But, the winter weather will still make for hazardous driving on Friday and early Saturday, so be ready. Is it spring yet?
