Approximately 100 million Americans enjoy boating each year. With spring weather upon us and Memorial Day weekend around the corner, it's the time of year when boats in the northern region come out of hibernation. But what is the best place in the state for boating? Boat U.S. named East Tawas the Michigan area that is best for boating.

Boating was a 49.3 billion dollar industry, according to SI Yachts 2020 report. They report that there are 77.9 boats per 1,000 people in Michigan. That is the fifth highest in the country. In addition, Michigan has 6.6% of the recreational boat registrations.

East Tawas

To compile their list, Boat U.S. looked at the most livable boating towns in the country. Cost of living, median income, and outdoor recreation were a few of the major categories examined to define what classified as the best boating towns. "The recently upgraded East Tawas State Dock is a first-class marina with 140 slips and all the amenities you could want, including a boat launch, playground/park, and pump-out services. There are 13 boat launches and an additional two marinas in the area," Boat U.S. says of East Tawas.

East Tawas sits upon the shoreline of Lake Huron. The area has numerous visitor attractions, including the Tawas Point Lighthouse. Furthermore, there are six different beaches to pick from in East Tawas, many of which are known as some of the best destinations for families to enjoy.

East Tawas is almost 70% water, so it's an ideal boating destination in the Great Lakes State. The East Tawas State Dock harbor in Tawas Bay has a 140-slip marina. It draws boaters from all over the state. Some main activities include sailing, jet skiing, paddling, and fishing. With a swimming beach nearby, this area is a popular gathering spot for festivals and live events.

East Tawas is about 180 miles from Detroit. It is a summer hot spot for those looking for great outdoor adventures. With its four large marinas spread over 40 miles of shoreline, it's easy to see why East Tawas was named the Michigan area that is the best spot for boating.
