Old Bowling Lane

You might not have noticed, but bowling is making a huge comeback. Many alleys around the area are noticing a surge of new fans! My youth started in many leagues, and throughout the years, I enjoyed alleys like Pampa Lanes, Continental Lanes, Apollo Lanes, Miclli's, Shores, The Rec Bowl, Bonanza, Ark Sterling, and many others.

Some  bowling facts include, the State of Michigan has close to 300 alleys and Detroit is home to the "Bowling Capitol of the World." The city has 80 alleys and over 50,000 bowling leagues. The Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mi with 90 total lanes is the largest center in the country. Thunderbowl is also home to the Greater Detroit Bowling Association Hall of Fame.

Bowling centers now trying to keep up with the changing times are re-inventing the look. Bright colors, Neon lights, glow nights, and fun family themes bring an all-new crowd to enjoy the game.

But one of my favorites is a short drive away from downtown Detroit to the Garden Bowl. It's unmistakably the oldest alley around still in business today. A bonus is that it's next to Sergeant Pepperoni's Pizzeria. I still have my Hammer ball and shoes, and it's about time I venture out and hit the lanes again sometime soon. Maybe pick up the phone and call some friends and enjoy some good, old-fashioned pin-smashing fun. The fun is back in 2023.
