Okay Detroit – What Do You Call This?
What do you call this? Is it a sliding glass door or a doorwall? I blame the folks at mlive.com for this one. They made a facebook post saying only people in Southeast Michigan call it a “doorwall” – is that true? Here’s my sliding glass doorwall door of doors (every time I say “doorwall” I started humming like an Oasis song).
According to the folks at Awesome Mitten – here’s why it’s called a doorwall:
- Doorwall — In Michigan, a “doorwall” is what locals call a sliding-glass door. Maybe we chose this word so that we wouldn’t forget that we can’t pass through it without opening it first.
Now I’m sitting here thinking of Michigan Words:
- Pop: It’s not soda or a soft drink. It’s pop – as in a two coneys, fries and a pop.
- Coney: There’s the hot dog (long story but it’s our thing with coney style chili, onions and mustard…that’s it!). And then there’s the actual Coney restaurant itself – you go there to get your dogs, or breakfast…normally open until 2pm (or later if it’s a fancy one). Quick service, friendly people and something you identify with when talking to your friends (“Oh I only go to the Coney Cafe…or I was in Leo’s Tuesday)
- The Mac: Not a burger but a bridge. Heading over “The Mac” – how long until we get to “The Mac”? Oh it’s a thing.
- Euchre: It’s not just a card game. It’s what happens when four people from Michigan are in a room for more than ten minutes. I can’t count the number of times people at a party have said “euchre”? and the next thing you know a game breaks out. Although it can lead to fights…like we learned on our show:
And yes – Family Guy had some fun with it as well.
