Thunder over Michigan is one of the best events that comes to Michigan every summer. This years event had people holding their breath for a much different reason. Most years, people are blown away by the amazing plane demonstrations, but this show came with a crash. Thankfully, both people in the plane were able to eject without a problem and were taken to the hospital just for observations.

It all happened on Sunday afternoon during the air show at Willow Run in Ypsi. A, MiG 23 Russian Fighter jet was in the air when all of a sudden it began to nose dive. In the video, you can see two passengers of the plane eject from the cockpit and deploy their parachutes. the plane then crashed into a Bellville apartment complex where it hit multiple cars. Thankfully there was no one in the cars at the time of the crash.

Like I said, the passengers of the plane were taken to the hospital for observation and are both said to be doing fine.

Here is the video:

Wayne County Airport Authority released the following statement:

"Shortly after 4:00 p.m. Sunday, a MiG-23 demonstration plane performing at the Yankee Air Museum’s Thunder over Michigan air show crashed into the parking lot at the Waverly on the Lake Apartments in Belleville. The pilot and backseater successfully ejected from the aircraft before the crash. While it did not appear they sustained any significant injuries, first responders transported the pair to a nearby hospital as a precaution. The aircraft struck unoccupied vehicles in the apartment complex’s parking lot. No one at the apartment complex nor the air show was injured. The FAA is investigating the crash."

When it is all said and done, we are all very thankful that these pilots and the people on the ground were not hurt. A very scary moment looks like it had the best outcome possible.

Hey It’s Ryan, let me start off by saying…YES, I was born and raised in Wixom, Michigan although a lot of listeners like to joke that I am from Arizona. WCSX has always been my radio home, I have been at the station since I was a 23-year-old intern, co-host of Big Jim’s House, married with kids. Family and radio are what I love, but don’t get me started on golf! Like some, I have become obsessed with golf and you can hear all about that on “The Ball Washer Pod” right here on WCSX. One of my other passions is helping out the Vets. Since coming to WCSX I have been apart of raising hundreds of thousands for local vet groups. Other than that, I am a goofy guy, loving life, my family and talking to you on the radio. Ryan writes about golf, family and what happens on “Big Jim’s House.”
