This Week In Science – Thick Necks Dads Are Bad?
Here’s a quick rundown of this week in science . . .
1. A study measured people’s brainwaves while CPR was being done, and found there can still be spikes of brain activity an hour after someone is unresponsive. The study authors think it could be linked to near-death experiences, but say they’d need a bigger sample size to prove it.
2. In pet news: A study found it might be healthier for cats to go vegan. Experts aren’t convinced though, and think the study was flawed.
3. In parenting news: A study found that if a guy has a really thick neck, we assume he’s probably not a great dad.
4. In health news: A scary study found kids may never fully recover from a bad concussion . . . but the spice turmeric might help cure indigestion . . . and you may get a more accurate reading if you take your blood pressure while lying down.
5. In alien news: NASA announced they now have a director of UFO research . . . the head of NASA said there are probably over a trillion Earth-like planets in the universe . . . and those two fossilized “aliens” unveiled in Mexico this week? They might just be fakes made of crushed-up human and animal bones glued together.
6. In other space news: We proved we can make oxygen on Mars. One of the rovers has a machine that pulls oxygen from the air. They announced it’s been able to make enough of it to keep a dog alive for 10 hours. (???) We’d obviously need a much bigger version to keep a team of astronauts going. But it’s possible.
And speaking of astronauts: Frank Rubio broke the American record for most time in space on a single mission, 356 days. He’s set to come home September 27th. So he’ll have been up there for over a year, 371 days.
(A Russian cosmonaut still holds the overall record of 437 days.)
7. And in work news: A study found everyday pleasures like coffee . . . or listening to music on THIS STATION . . . can elevate brain activity and make you better at your job. You’re welcome, America.
