A Brazilian man recently won a long court battle to prove that he has not been dead for the past 28 years.

71-year-old Manoel Marciano da Silva retired about two years ago and looked forward to collecting his pension. However, he was told he would not receive his retirement benefits because government records showed he was declared dead back in 1995. Feeling fairly confident that he was in fact not dead, Marciano da Silva did a little investigating and found out that in 1995, his ex-wife and two other witnesses reported he had died and was buried in a public cemetery. He says he learned about it in 2012 when he tried to vote in an election and was told he couldn't. At the time he didn't really care, but when he wasn't able to collect his pension, he cared very much.

Marciano de Silva thought proving he wasn't dead would be easy to do, but he was wrong. It took lawyers and witnesses to testify that he wasn't dead, and two years in court to throw out his death certificate and get the government to acknowledge he was still alive. In the end, he was finally brought back to life. As for why he was pronounced dead in 1995, he believes his ex-wife, who is illiterate, may have been tricked into declaring him dead. Wasn't this a Monty Python sketch?
