Found a couple cool stories the “cleanse the web palate” after a long week:
SEVEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL FINDS 2.95-CARAT DIAMOND IN STATE PARK
Aspen Brown and her father, Luther, visited Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas earlier this month to celebrate Aspen’s seventh birthday. And wouldn’t you know it? She found a rare 2.95-carat golden brown diamond.
Aspen was resting near some rocks when she spotted the shiny stone, which is about the size of a green pea. She took the stone to the park staff and they confirmed it was a diamond — and one of the largest found this year.
Aspen named the diamond after herself and said she was very happy with her discovery. The assistant park superintendent Waymon Cox described it as “one of the most beautiful” diamonds he’s seen in recent years.
The park allows visitors to keep any diamonds they find, which is an extra bonus for Aspen and her family because a diamond of that size can cost anywhere from $12,000 to $50,000 after it’s polished and set.
SURFER COUPLE SAVES MAN AND WOMAN STUCK IN OCEAN CURRENT
Casey Flaherty and her boyfriend, Alex Rosenthal, were waiting in Casey’s car near the beach in Belmar, New Jersey, when they saw two people struggling in some rough ocean current.
Casey and Alex happen to be surfers, so they grabbed their surfboards and headed into the water.
A man and woman, who appeared to be in their 70s, had their hands up. They were clearly stuck in a rip current.
Casey helped the woman onto her board, and Alex grabbed the man and helped him swim back to shore. The man was still struggling a bit once they got to the beach, so a bystander stepped in and helped carry the man to safety until he regained some of his strength to stand.
Both the man and the woman were rattled, but thankful to be away from danger.
And the adventure ended without injury as paramedics arrived soon after the rescue to make sure everyone was OK.
