Stewart Copeland Of The Police
Stewart Copeland of the Police is in town this Sunday with the DSO doing Stewart Copeland: Police Deranged (click here for tickets) . We caught up with Stewart before he got on a plane for Detroit – discussing his love of Motown, musical influences, and what’s the ONE song from The Police he’d play for someone who had never heard the band. Here’s part of his answer:
I would say either message in a bottle or can’t stay losing you.
Why is it there’s some personal connection to it?
They’re both some of my favorite songs that Sting wrote but Can’t stand losing you was where we discovered our bass ackwards approach to rhythm Where if everything’s not where it’s supposed to be but totally rocks, you know how to tap your foot to it. But it’s not where it’s supposed to be the backbeat is on the front and the down, you know, the front beat is on the back and so that kind of shows what our gimmick was, if you like.
That’s sort of like our trick, our gimmick. Let’s call it that. Let’s take it right down to the bass level here.
