Americans Rejoice October Is National Pizza Month
October is National Pizza Month! And I know what you thinking, when did this National Pizza Month become a thing? History and the Internet says it started by a pizzeria owner in 1984 by the owner of Pizza Today magazine which I didn’t know existed. So I did some research and found some tidbits for you:
Pizza By The Numbers
- Americans approximately inhale 350 slices per second.
- PIZZA is a $30 billion per year industry.
- There are approximately 61,269 pizzerias in the United States.
- Each person eats about 46 pizzas a year.

Pizza Has Style
Styles of Pizzas? Besides Detroit Style, it seems to be endless from Chicago style, Neapolitan, New York, St. Louis, New Haven, Greek, Quad City, Deep Fried, BBQ, and yes even Cauliflower.
Top Toppings? Pepperoni #1 followed by Sausage, Mushrooms, Onions, Peppers, Olives and the list is endless what people like. Pineapple is a fight that has this country divided.
So get ready to celebrate and try to step out of your comfort zone and try different types all month long. But do NOT try Pumpkin Spice Pizza only because they haven’t invented one yet.
People From Ohio Are Strange When It Comes To Pizza
In Ohio, pizzas are square-cut. This gives you more pieces for sharing. It is also better due to the heavy amounts of toppings on a Chicago-style thin-crust pizza. To be clear, not all of Ohio’s pizzas are sliced into squares; just the majority of them are. Folklore has it Ohio pizza was cut in small pieces so that ladies could eat it without getting any topping on their outfits in the 50’s. We’re talking about Columbus-style pizza, which shares a hometown with The Ohio State University.
Pizza Is Good Anytime
National Pizza Month in October gives us all month to explore the world of pizza and all the flavors it offers. As if we needed any excuse to celebrate and indulge in the cheesy, mouthwatering, satisfying meal that is pizza.

Pizza Can Save Your Life
Ohio woman who called 911 for pizza was reporting domestic violence against her mom “This is the wrong number to order a pizza,” the dispatcher said, then added shortly after, “I’m getting you now, OK… Is the guy still there?” An Ohio police dispatcher is being lauded for recognizing that a woman who called 911 — and ordered a pizza — was trying to report a domestic violence incident. Read the true story here.
Strangest Pizza Commercial
The strangest TV commercial had to deal with the company spokesperson’s mascot. The Noid
The Noid is an advertising character for Domino’s Pizza created in the 1980s and revived in 2021. Clad in a red, skin-tight, rabbit-eared body suit. The whole idea revolved around getting your pizza in 30 minutes or less.
No matter what type of pizza you crave we can always remember what our school lunch pizza was like. Thank goodness we don’t ever have to resort to that pizza ever again.
