So how are you feeling about the game this weekend? Nervous? Excited? Both? I’ve been saying this on air all week to Lions fans…enjoy the moment. Be present. We’ve got a home playoff game on National TV. Helluva lot better than losing 12 games and wondering if their going to fire the coach and GM, right?
I’ve only been in Detroit for 22 years, but I can honestly say I’ve NEVER seen an NFL fan base quite like the Lions. The love they have for the team, the players and even the owners is second to none. Are we passionate? Hell yes. But maybe that’s something you have to understand about Detroit. There’s a parallel to our teams and the culture in the Motor City. Our best sports team all have one thing in common. Grit.
The Bad Boys were full of grit (and didn’t take crap from anyone) – we liked Mahorn and Laimbeer pissing off the rest of the league while Jordan went flying on his butt when he took it to the hoop. The Red Wings? How about the Grind Line – three guys full of grit who wore you down with hustle and heart. Tigers? For all the stars over the years, it’s the hard nose folks like Leyland that we gravitated to as fans.
Maybe that’s why we love this version of the Lions. The entire team is full of grit (it’s not a marketing slogan, it’s a mindset). I can’t wait to see what happens Sunday night with the Rams. Stafford knows what these fans are capable of doing to get their team fired up. Imagine what it’ll be like for a playoff game.
