Number 1 Pet Peeve of Fathers – Just In Time For Fathers Day
What’s the number 1 pet peeve of fathers as we head towards Fathers Day this Sunday? According to this survey it’s leaving the lights on. Really? (We’ll get to that in a second).
Here’s the top five…let’s see if you agree with the number 1 Pet Peeve of Fathers
- Leaving the lights on (27%)
- Someone stealing the TV remote/changing the channel (21%)
- Thermostat too high/low (20%)
- Doors being kept open (17%)
- Dirty dishes in the sink (15%)
Leaving the lights tops the list? Number three should be number one. One of the most honest scenes in a movie ever came from “Daddy’s Home 2” when they discover someone has “fiddled” with the thermostat. You just can’t do that!
Big Jim’s Father’s Day Pet Peeves – Not Too Bad…but still
I’ve been very fortunate to have a couple of great sons (Adam and Ryan), but if I had to make a list of pet peeves (including my number 1 pet peeve for fathers)…here you go:

- Dishes in their rooms. It’s become a recurring theme over the years, you look in the silverware drawer and suddenly notice you’re down 5 forks and 7 spoons. You ask if anyone has any dishes to load into the dishwasher – get met with a resounding “nope” and then magically at 3am when you get for work in the morning, the sink is full of coffee cups, plates, silverware, a missing P-51 Mustang from World War, Joey Harrington’s shoulder pads, a duck, etc. (I’m exaggerating obviously – it’s a P-38)
- Eating the last of something. Never had a problem with my kids eating when they’re hungry, but it’s the empty container back in the fridge move. Oh that’s not cool.
- Last Minute. There’s a saying in my house “do what you’re supposed to do, then you can do what you want to”. Pretty simple right? I didn’t realize how much that bothers me when people wait until the last minute to do things until recently. My son waits until the last minute to round up all the trash and get it to the curb. I know – it got done, relax Dad. But still…why wait?
My Dad and his pet peeves (Number 1 pet peeve) might have been his only one
I’ve been sitting here thinking about my Dad (also named Jim) and what his pet peeves were – and for the life of me I really don’t remember anything other than dinner was at 6pm and you better not be late.
Dad was my best friend growing up, we went through a lot together (I went to 13 schools in 12 years), but he was always there and did the best he could. Isn’t that all you can ask from a parent? Oh…and don’t touch the thermostat. Ever.
