The birthplace of Coney Dogs, Michigan, by sheer volume and duration of its Coney restaurants, makes a strong bid. The famous American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island in Detroit followed Todoroff’s Original Coney Island in Jackson, Michigan, which began in 1914.

The Coney Dogs Myth

Coney Dogs from a secret undisclosed restaurant

It’s a myth that the Coney dog, also called the Coney Island hot dog, originated at Coney Island, New York, where Nathan’s popularized the dog in a bun. Another dispelled myth is that Greek immigrants passing through New York and its famed Coney Island appropriated the Coney Island name for their Coney dog version.

The Detroit Coney Dog War

In 1917, American Coney Island opened on West Lafayette Street in downtown Detroit. A few years later, in 1924, he brought his brother William to Detroit to help. Keros’s brother opened Lafayette Coney Island when space opened up next door. The businesses have operated continuously in the same locations ever since.

Todoroff's Original Coney Island

The first Coney restaurant in Michigan, Todoroff's Original Coney Island in Jackson, Michigan, was founded in 1914. Detroit's American Coney Island opened just a few years later, in 1917, on West Lafayette Street in downtown Detroit. Gust Keros came to Detroit from Greece and started American Coney Island.

Now, I know these findings will be disputed, and I welcome them to challenge my findings. I am mostly proud that all this happened in Michigan, not some off-beat place like Pittsburg.
