1st Look: Preview of The Rocket Mortgage Classic
It’s another big weekend for the city of Detroit as the PGA Tour makes Detroit their latest stop. It’s time for the Rocket Mortgage Classic and I have a full preview of the event and who I think will win it.
PREVEIW OF THE ROCKET MORTGAGE CLASSIC
Like I said, this is a big week for Detroit and all though the field may not be stacked from top to bottom, there are still a lot of great golfers making their way to the city. It’s also another great chance this summer for the city to highlight itself and show off what it has become. Now, for the golf.
THE FIELD:
It may not be the best field in golf this weekend but there are still a lot of great storylines to follow. For example, Tom Kim will be playing and after having a great showing at the Travelers, it will be interesting to see how he follows up the second place finish at a much easier course in Detroit Golf Club.
Cameron Young is the highest ranked player in the field this year at 23rd in the world, but there are also 7 past major winners in the field. Here is a look at some notable names coming to Detroit.
The 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic field includes seven major championship winners, 63 PGA TOUR winners, and features 10 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, including:
- No. 23 – Cameron Young
- No. 26 – Tom Kim
- No. 30 – Chris Kirk
- No. 31 – Akshay Bhatia
- No. 36 – Min Woo Lee
- No. 41 – Will Zalatoris
- No. 42 – Stephan Jaeger
- No. 42 – Nicolai Højgaard
- No. 41 – Robert MacIntyre
- No. 49 – Rickie Fowler (2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic winner and Rocket Mortgage ambassador)
THE YOUNG TALENT
Like I said, the field is not filled with the top players on tour, but the main story this weekend will be about the young players looking to make a name for themselves. For example, Miles Russell will be making his PGA Tour debut this weekend in Detroit. Miles is a 15 year old who made waves when he finished top 25 on the Korn Ferry tour earlier this year. He is also the youngest player to make their debut since Jordan Spieth.
Neal Shipley will also be in the field. Neal just turned pro after becoming only the 7th player to be low amateur at both the Masters and U.S. Open. Neal is one of those young players that will draw a huge following come the weekend.
Here is a look at what the pros will face this weekend. I took “The Ball Washer Boys” out for the media outing a few weeks ago. Check it out!
FINAL THOUGHTS AND PREDCITIONS
To wrap up, don’t get bummed by the lack of stars in the field this year. I know for a fact the golf will be great and we will have another wild finish like have had in the 5 pervious Rocket Mortgage Classics. Now, for my predictions, I think Tom Kim follows up his playoff loss with a win in Detroit. I also think Miles Russell takes a top 10 finish and earns his way into more tournaments this season.
