Big Jim’s Observation on Pavel (for what it’s worth)
I’ve been fortunate to watch some of the best hockey players in the world – and that was just the 2002 Red Wings team….10 guys in the hall, are you kidding me? But there was something special about watching Pavel on the ice. You stopped what you were doing at the Joe (putting down the hot and ready, or taking a second sip of beer) to watch the Magic Man go to work. It wasn’t just the goals or assists – it was the style. No one was smoother on the ice (and yes, I’m including Gretzky)…it was mesmerizing to watch Pavel coming down the ice on a rush…freezing defensemen and watching teammates keeping their heads up for a pass that would come out of nowhere. We were VERY blessed to be in a city like Detroit with players like Pavel Datsyuk. One of one? Absolutely.
