The song was a number one hit in the late '80s but it was written years before. Whitesnake "Here I go Again" was written in 1981 while David Coverdale was going through the breakup of his marriage to Julia Borkowski. David and Julia married in 1974. She was his first wife.

"Here I Go Again" speaks differently to people... something that I love and value. My favorite songs have he ability to let people feel and pull what they need from the song. In the case of Whitesnake "Here I Go Again," many people hear the song as inspirational: standing on your own, ready for the challenges that lie ahead.

I kid you not. Jon Lord, David's bandmate from Deep Purple played gospel organ on the original. Drums don't even hit in until more than a minute into the song. Listen for yourself:

The original also had slightly different lyrics. The line "Like a hobo I was born to walk alone," was changed to "Like a drifter I was born to walk alone." Yikes.

Whitesnake 'Here I Go Again' 1987

David Coverdale wrote the song with then guitarist, Bernie Marsden. It was released on their Saints 'N' Sinners album and went to number 37 in the U.K. by the time 1987 rolled around, Coverdale had a completely different line-up for Whitesnake. Well over 30 people have been a member of Whitesnake. The only constant member is David Coverdale.

We all know the MTV video for this version, featuring Don Airey on keyboards. the mesmerizing Tawney Kitaen flipping and crawling all over Jaguar hoods got plenty of attention. David married Tawney in 1989. Their marriage lasted just two years.

With non-stop play on MTV and the updated remix, Whitesnake 'Here I Go Again' went to number one.

David Coverdale reprises the song and takes it to number one in the U.S.
