So I’ve been deciding between joining Sam’s Club or Costco - and in the process of doing so discovered this graphic about the “secret to price tags” at Costco. Ever heard of it?

Costco Code - Here’s the graphic

It all started with this graphic on reddit. Then a bunch of people came out to explain how it works, including this guy on TikTok - take a minute to watch.

So here’s what I understand:

  • Prices that end in .99 are a regular price
  • Anything with a .97 on the end is a “managers special” for that specific store and won’t last long.
  • If it’s got a .49 or .79 that means it's a special offer from the manufacturer.
  • What about a .00 on the end? That’s an item that’s low in stock and the managers want to get rid of it.
  • And if it’s got an asterisk on the price…it’s a discontinued item which is priced VERY low to get it gone in a hurry.

From everything I’ve read online this is 100% real - and I wonder if Costco would consider changing it now that “the code” is out? I’d think you keep it. People love to feel like they're getting a deal, right? I’m actually more inclined to check out Costco because of this hack. It’s cool.

Costco vs Sam's Club - Which One?

So have you tried Sam's Club and/or Costco? Which one do you prefer - and why? It's interesting when you start doing the comparison of both. We're looking at it as a family of two (son is off to college). Is it worth it or are we buying a membership we won't use? (I'm always afraid of buying too much stuff and not actually eating or using it).
