The Great Michigan Ranch Dressing Chugging Competition – How Long To Chug 24 Ounces Of Ranch?

Maybe this becomes another food eating tradition like Nathan’s hot dog eating contest – the great Michigan Ranch Dressing Chugging Challenge. Oh it happened in Belding, Michigan over Labor Day…

Maybe this becomes another food eating tradition like Nathan’s hot dog eating contest - the great Michigan Ranch Dressing Chugging Challenge. Oh it happened in Belding, Michigan over Labor Day Weekend (for the record - Belding is between Lansing and Grand Rapids). So what the hell happened? Here’s the details:

Michigan Ranch Dressing Chugging - Why?

First off, this was all the idea of the folks at the Harmful Roester restaurant in Belding, Michigan. Have a ranch dressing chugging competition - there were 12 contestants competing for a $100 gift card and a free order of wings every week until next Spring.

The winner? Zach Orvis downed 24 ounces of ranch dressing in 10 seconds. TEN seconds. When asked how he downed it so fast the response was perfect Michigan modesty ““I’ve seen people pour about that much on their salads, so what’s the difference?”

Doesn’t get more midwest than this, does it? I can see the gears churning in your head - could you possibly down 24 ounces of ranch in 10 seconds? Believe me, I’ve been thinking the same thing - maybe we have a Faygo vs Vernors chug off? Who can chug a six pack in the least amount of time?

The owners of Harmful Roester are onto something with this chugging competition - and I guarantee some of these professional food eaters are looking at a small town in Michigan as one of their next stops.

BTW - where did ranch dressing come from?

I really thought there was a "hidden valley" that held all the ranch dressing. But Screamin' Scott put me right and gave the 411. Here's an excerpt from the story about Steve (a plumber BTW just looking to feed his crew), the guy who created it:

From my memory, it was buttermilk, Miracle Whip, some spices, and I think some chopped-up shallots — and then, the ingredient that was kept secret: pure MSG,” Kept secret MSG is short for monosodium glutamate. It’s a flavor enhancer derived from L-glutamic acid, naturally present in many foods.

In the 1950s, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) put a federal ban on sweeteners and gave MSG a bad rap. Allegedly, Chinese restaurants used MSG in their cooking, prompting the hate against cooking with MSG. Today, there is no concrete proof that MSG is bad in moderation.

In 1956, he purchased the Sweetwater Ranch up on San Marcos Pass. He soon renamed the spread Hidden Valley Ranch. ( sound familiar?)
